Our name isn’t Joy Labs for nothin’! I mean, our values are based on the word HAPPY and our paid-time-off policy is called Happy Time. Sounds pretty joyful, right?!
I get a lot of questions about what it’s like to work for an all-remote company, how it works, and how the benefits and perks are. Before I answer that I must say, in general, companies are starting to value their employees a lot more which is great to see. This is providing those employees with more comprehensive benefits and extra intriguing perks.
Now to go back to the other question – how are the perks at Joy Labs you may ask? Simply put, they are awesome 😎
Happy Time
At Joy Labs, we like to call our paid-time-off policy, Happy Time. Our employees are required to take a minimum of 160 hours of Happy Time each year. This means that our employees spend at least 20 days a year away from their desk, spending time with their family, friends, pets, vacationing, or whatever it is they want to do!

We know that things in life come up that aren’t planned for, and we know the importance of work/life balance, which is why we don’t put a cap on Happy Time. We also make the 160 hours a mandatory minimum, because we know that sometimes it’s easy to get wrapped up into your work and it can be tough to break off from it. However, taking time for yourself is important and we encourage our employees to take care of their mental health and happiness 😊
A report by TSheets stated that “On average, workers receive 11 days of PTO per year. Roughly 16% of employees surveyed said they weren’t receiving any PTO, while 21% received between six and 10 days”. Keep in mind, PTO is not a federal law, it is an added benefit to employees set by the employer. So everyone does it differently!
We also don’t feel like we should be the ones saying which holidays our employees should take off. Everyone’s different, and some people could celebrate different holidays. So, our Joy Labs members are able to use this Happy Time to take off the days that they desire most.
Maternity & Paternity Leave
Babies are awesome! Becoming a parent is one of the most rewarding parts of life, which is why Joy Labs encourages its employees to utilize their maternity/paternity time. We want them to spend that quality time with their newborn. Our policy is this – for the primary parent, they are allowed 120 days of paid-time-off. For the secondary parent, they are allowed 60 days. We don’t specify the maternity and paternity part, as all parents are different.
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) gives employees up to 12 workweeks in a 12-month period for parental leave. Although the employee’s job is safe during that time, companies are not required to pay their employees during maternity leave. On average, private companies offer fully paid maternity leave for up to 4 weeks, according to The Balance Careers.
Workplace Allowance
Since we don’t have the stereotypical office at Joy Labs, we want to make sure each employee has their ideal home office set up. It’s important that people have the proper desk, an ergonomically correct chair, and any needed cords or connectors they may need. I mean, these things are given at any typical office, so why shouldn’t a remote employee get the same benefit? Here at Joy Labs, we offer our employees a $2,000 allowance to help them get what they need to be comfortable, productive, and happy.
